When the one-way valves in veins malfunction due to age, injury, or obstruction, the resulting condition is called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Without treatment, CVI often progresses so that symptoms worsen, skin breaks down, ulcers forms, and the patient becomes at a higher risk for developing deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
